Kempglaze Glass and Aluminium Delivers StormGuard® Cyclonic Solution for Carnarvon Workers’ Housing

In the Shire of Carnarvon, two new residential dwellings were constructed to provide workers’ housing in one of Australia’s most cyclone-prone regions. Located within Australia’s highest cyclone classification zone, every element of the build needed to be suited to the local environment. To meet the site’s performance requirements, Kempglaze Glass and Aluminium was engaged to manufacture and install the complete glazing package, including windows, doors, shower screens, mirrors and a full suite of Amplimesh StormGuard® Cyclonic security screens. 

A key requirement of the project was a security screening solution that could meet the region’s demanding conditions while complementing the homes’ design. This led to the selection of Amplimesh StormGuard® Cyclonic, with the project representing the first new-build residential application of the system in Australia. 

Kempglaze Glass and Aluminium custom-manufactured and installed Amplimesh StormGuard® Cyclonic systems throughout both dwellings. The installation included 30 made-to-measure escape window screens servicing bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and living areas, along with 10 door and fixed screen assemblies across the two homes. Finished in Surfmist Satin, the screens complemented the architectural design with a clean, modern coastal aesthetic suited to the surrounding environment. 

Jace Kempton, Director at Kempglaze Glass and Aluminium, explains, “In Norwest, we’re located within Cyclone Region D, Australia’s highest cyclone classification zone, so the products we install into homes need to handle the local conditions. Amplimesh StormGuard® was a great fit for this project, providing the strength and durability needed for the region while allowing us to incorporate escape screens where required. Amplimesh Escape Screens were installed into the sliding and awning windows to provide emergency egress capability while still maintaining the look and functionality of the homes.” 

A standout feature of the project was the expansive rear entertaining area, where a four-panel sliding door assembly was paired with oversized fixed screen panels to create a generous screened opening. The custom configuration maximised natural ventilation and visibility while maintaining the required structural performance. 

StormGuard® Cyclonic was selected for its proven performance in harsh coastal environments. Manufactured using 316 marine-grade stainless steel mesh and heavy-duty structural aluminium framing, the system has been tested to Australian Standards for impact resistance, knife shear resistance and jemmy attack, while also exceeding debris impact requirements for residential applications in Cyclone Region D. The fine woven mesh allows approximately 41% airflow ventilation, helping occupants enjoy natural ventilation and unobstructed views while maintaining security. 

Beyond the product itself, Kempglaze Glass and Aluminium’s local fabrication and installation expertise was key to achieving the final result. Each screen was custom manufactured to suit the individual openings across both dwellings, delivering a precise fit while maintaining the homes’ modern aesthetic.
